Independence Palace — also known as Reunification Palace — is where the Vietnam War effectively ended on April 30, 1975, when North Vietnamese tanks crashed through its gates in one of the defining moments of 20th-century history. The building itself is a striking example of modernist architecture designed by Vietnamese architect Ngô Viết Thụ and completed in 1966 as the official residence and workspace of South Vietnam's president. Its interiors — conference rooms, war rooms, banquet halls, and a basement command bunker with original 1960s communications equipment still in place — remain largely unchanged, providing an unusually intact time capsule of Cold War-era geopolitics. The grounds span 12 hectares with multiple floors and dozens of rooms, making a thorough visit a genuine physical commitment.
