The area encompasses primarily Districts 5 and 6 and retains a distinctly different character from the rest of HCMC — narrow grids of streets lined with traditional shophouses, Chinese-script signage, Taoist and Buddhist temples, and herbal medicine shops coexisting with modern commercial activity. Binh Tay Market is the commercial heart; Thien Hau Temple, Ong Bon Pagoda, and Phuoc An Hoi Quan Pagoda are the main religious sites. The area is most active in the early morning when wholesale market trade peaks and locals fill the congee and dim sum restaurants that have operated here for generations.
